Feb. 2, 2026 – Northwest Arkansas, home to Walmart and two other homegrown Fortune 500 companies, has officially claimed the top spot in one of the nation’s most respected economic rankings.

On Jan. 27, the Fayetteville–Springdale–Rogers metro has been named the No. 1 best‑performing large metropolitan area in America in the 2026 Milken Institute Best-Performing Cities Index — a recognition that underscores the region’s rapid growth, strong labor market, and expanding high‑tech economy .

This marks the culmination of several years of steady ascent, with the region placing in the top 15 every year since 2021. For the Northwest Arkansas Council, the ranking is an affirmation of the region’s long-term economic trajectory and the values that have shaped it. Northwest Arkansas’ success has never been the result of a single employer, project or moment. It reflects decades of collaboration across cities, businesses, educators and civic partners working toward a shared vision for growth and opportunity.

The Council’s work continues to focus on the long-term fundamentals that shape regional prosperity, including entrepreneurship through StartupNWA, housing and infrastructure conversations through Groundwork and continued efforts to strengthen opportunity across the region.

“This kind of performance does not happen by accident. It happens when a region chooses to plan together, invest together and compete together,” said Nelson Peacock, president and CEO of the Northwest Arkansas Council. “Northwest Arkansas has built the conditions that allow people and companies to thrive, while remaining focused on shared prosperity as growth continues.”

A Region Built on Momentum

The Milken Institute evaluates cities on job creation, wage growth, high‑tech output, housing affordability, and access to opportunity. Northwest Arkansas excelled across all categories, ranking 13th or higher in every labor market metric, making it one of the strongest job markets in the country .

Key drivers of the region’s rise include:

  • A booming construction sector, which grew nearly 10% in 2024
  • A fast-growing high‑tech industry supported by university research and corporate innovation
  • Housing affordability that remains competitive even amid population growth
  • Long-term planning focused on infrastructure, public services, and quality of life

“In Fayetteville, we are intentional about investing in what makes our city thrive,” said Fayetteville Mayor Molly Rawn. “This recognition highlights a community that believes in strategic investment, data-informed planning for growth, and opportunity for all” .

A National Landscape in Transition

The 2026 index shows a year when many U.S. cities experienced slowing job growth, rising unemployment, and higher living costs. Despite these national challenges, Northwest Arkansas stood out for its stability, resilience, and ability to keep affordability — a rare combination among major metro areas.

The region’s balanced approach to growth mirrors the Milken Institute’s broader findings: cities that pair innovation with affordability are best positioned to thrive.

A Southern Success Story

Eight of the top 12 large metros in the 2026 rankings are located in the South, signaling a broader shift in where economic opportunity is emerging in the United States. Yet Northwest Arkansas distinguishes itself even among these rising regions, surpassing well-known innovation hubs like Austin, Raleigh, and Salt Lake City to secure the No. 1 ranking .

Its consistent performance — top 15 for five consecutive years — reflects a long-term strategy rather than a short-term surge.

A Blueprint for Sustainable Growth

The Milken Institute emphasizes that cities succeed when they balance economic expansion with access to housing, infrastructure, and opportunity. Northwest Arkansas’ rise demonstrates how intentional planning, diversified industry growth, and strong civic leadership can create a thriving metropolitan region.

As Arkansas continues to attract national attention — from major corporate investments to national research institutions — Northwest Arkansas’ top ranking reinforces the state’s growing reputation as a center of innovation and economic vitality.
