BENTONVILLE, Ark. – June 22, 2026 – Nearly two weeks before some Medicare recipients will be able to access so-called GLP-1 medications by paying one flat fee per month, the nation’s largest retailer announced a nationwide effort to help those same beneficiaries better understand new prescription drug coverage options for the obesity and weight-loss wonder drug.
Walmart Inc., the parent company of Walmart and Sam’s Club, announced on Monday (July 22) plans to expand support services focused on weight-management education and healthcare navigation to help patients better understand available resources and next steps.
In a new release, Walmart said many seniors may struggle to understand eligibility requirements, prescription coverage processes, provider documentation requirements, and pharmacy fulfillment options as Medicare coverage continues to evolve.
“Healthcare can be complex, especially when coverage programs change,” said Kevin Host, senior vice president of Walmart Health & Wellness. “Our goal is to help customers access trusted information, understand their options, and feel confident navigating the healthcare system. Walmart pharmacists serve millions of patients every year, and we are committed to helping seniors connect with the resources they need.”
Earlier this month, CMS released its own educational materials in support of the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge, which will start on July 1, 2026. Those materials included prescriber and pharmacy fact sheets and prior authorization forms outlining the clinical critical for the
Short for glucagon-like peptide-1, these once-niche diabetes treatments have exploded into the mainstream as “wonder drugs,” reshaping everything from personal health routines to the nation’s medical economy. For millions of Americans, these injections represent a new kind of hope; for the health‑care system, they signal a seismic shift still unfolding.
Brand-name medications like Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, and Zepbound mimic a gut hormone that regulates appetite and blood sugar, leading to dramatic weight-loss results that have captivated patients and disrupted long-standing assumptions about obesity care. Their rise has triggered soaring demand, supply shortages, and a wave of new policies as insurers and federal programs scramble to keep pace.
In late December, the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) first announced a new voluntary test of a model designed to enable Medicare Part D plans and state Medicaid agencies to cover GLP-1 medications used for weight management and metabolic health improvement, while helping control costs for patients and taxpayers.
At the same time, the CMS said the Bridge program will allow eligible Medicare Part D enrollees to access GLP-1 medications for a $50 monthly copay on July 1. Despite GLP-1s being indicated for diabetes, obesity and some heart conditions, the Bridge program will almost solely be available to beneficiaries seeking weight management solutions.
Starting on July 1, the temporary program is set to run for a year and a half through the end of 2027. CMS has already issued a Request for Applications to manufacturers and notices of intent to state Medicaid agencies and Medicare Part D plans, both of which were due in January.
Through its nationwide pharmacy networks and healthcare resources at Walmart and Sam’s Club, the Bentonville retail giant said its initiative will provide Medicare beneficiaries with clearer guidance and hands-on support as weight-management drug coverage expands. The effort includes easy-to-understand educational materials that clarify prescription coverage pathways, as well as one-on-one pharmacist consultations to help seniors navigate eligibility, documentation requirements, and next steps.
Beneficiaries will also receive help accessing government and healthcare resources, along with expanded in-store and club support at nearly 5,000 locations — many in rural or medically underserved communities, company official said.
With approximately 90% of the U.S. population living within 10 miles of a Walmart store, the company’s pharmacy network serves as an accessible healthcare resource nationwide, often serving as a primary point of care for patients in rural and underserved communities, company officials said.
As new coverage programs take effect, Walmart said it is also leveraging its scale to help ensure that critical educational resources and pharmacist support are available where access to healthcare information may be limited. Beyond helping customers navigate coverage options, Walmart said it is uniquely positioned to support them throughout their weight-management journey.
Building on its recent expansion of weight management support services through Walmart’s Better Care Services platform, the nation’s largest retailer said it continues to broaden access to tools and resources for customers on GLP-1 treatment or exploring it.
Walmart’s support may include nutrition resources, wellness products, pharmacist consultations, convenient same-day pharmacy delivery, and connections to additional health and wellness services that help customers manage their overall health. Pharmacists at Walmart stores also provide guidance on medication use, nutrition, hydration, and healthy habits to support customers throughout their healthcare journey, officials said.
From healthier food choices and recipe inspiration to vitamins and supplements, fitness equipment, and a healthcare services marketplace, Walmart said it can help customers access the products and services that support lasting lifestyle changes.
For Sam’s Club members, pharmacists serve as trusted healthcare resources, helping members navigate questions about medications, coverage, and wellness, company officials said.
“Our members place tremendous trust in their pharmacists, and we take that responsibility seriously,” said Matt Holt, vice president of healthcare options at Sam’s Club. “For years, our pharmacies have been recognized for delivering exceptional service, and we’re proud to help members better understand their healthcare options and connect with the information they need to make informed decisions.”
